Course description

This double degree offers a comprehensive program to meet the significant increase in demand for computer scientists with an accounting background. Providing both the technical skills of computer science and the accounting and business skills of an accounting degree, this course enhances students' knowledge of business and information technology (IT) sectors and offers flexible career choices. Key features include opportunities for industry-based project work, a choice of streams in computer science incorporating software engineering, data engineering, artificial intelligence or network engineering, and advanced studies in accounting.

Course structure

First-year studies include computer science, mathematics, object-oriented programming in Java and C++, and accounting and management. Later-year studies cover databases, computer systems architecture and design, algorithms and data structures, economics, business law, and financial accounting. Students can specialise in artificial intelligence, data engineering, computer networks or software engineering. In third year students, can undertake an industry-based software engineering project.

Students can also take subjects from other disciplines such as arts, commerce, and sciences. Honours is available to students who demonstrate exceptional merit in either or both degrees, and requires an additional year of study for each degree.

Prerequisites

VCE Units 3 & 4: Study score of at least 25 in English (ESL), or 20 in any other English, and a study score of at least 25 in Mathematical Methods (either) or a study score of at least 20 in Specialist Mathematics.

Additional information

Students without the appropriate computer science background may be required to commence three weeks early to undertake accelerated first-year computer science units.

Career opportunities

Graduates are employed in commercial systems development, information systems management, financial analysis, and general management in science and technology-related fields. Graduates may also apply modern IT techniques in the commercial sector, including banking and finance. Computer science or Accounting consultancy work, teaching, and professional practice are other areas that attract graduates of this program.

Professional recognition

Computer science graduates are eligible for professional membership of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) with which thiscourse is accredited. The Bachelor of Accounting is accredited by CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA). Graduates are eligible for membership with either professional accounting body or other professional groups such as National Institute of Accountants (NIA) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
