Course description

This course prepares students for teaching and leading in fields relevant to outdoor environmental education, with emphasis on natural history, environmental studies, and social and cultural aspects of the environment. (Please note: Teaching in government schools requires an additional one-year Graduate Diploma in Education).

While the course provides the opportunity for students to develop some outdoor skills and knowledge, the main focus is on outdoor environmental education studies.

Course structure

First year emphasises basic concepts in environmental studies and facilitates a personal and theoretical understanding of outdoor environmental education. In second year, students undertake environmental interpretation studies concerned with river and wetlands, bush and local environs. Third-year studies include aspects of natural history, environmental sustainability, outdoor education, and the social and cultural aspects of the environment. Students undertake 110 days' fieldwork over the duration of the program.

Scholarships

Additional costs (AUD)

Students should allow $1500 - $2000 to purchase suitable outdoor field equipment such as a sleeping bag and wet-weather gear. These items may be purchased from any supplier and will be the students personal property. Students are encouraged to bring any camping gear they may already have and to wait until they have commenced the course before purchasing any new gear.

Middle Band

Re-ranking is based on English (any), Outdoor and Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Geography, Biology, and criteria associated with the La Trobe University Rural and Regional Student Access Scheme.

Extra requirements

Non-Year 12 applicants who have not completed VCE or equivalent, or undertaken tertiary study within the past three years must sit a STAT in Written English; they are encouraged to complete a La Trobe Outdoor and Environmental Education Supplementary Information form. Prerequisites

Units 3 & 4: Study score of at least 20 in English (any).

Career opportunities

Graduates can work as classroom teachers (on completion of a Graduate Diploma in Education); instructors in school camps or environment centres; in environmental interpretation in zoos, national parks and tourism operations.

Professional recognition

The course is recognised by the Victorian Institute of Teaching for recognition as preparation for teaching in primary and secondary schools when combined with a fourth year of study (Graduate Diploma in Education).
