Course description
This specialised course provides students with a strong base in technical concepts and design techniques, as well as strong management and teamwork skills in the development of multiple software products for a variety of industries. The course is distinguished by its advanced and specialised subjects in software engineering. Students undertake a research thesis in software engineering, which can lead to further research opportunities such as a PhD.
Course structure
Students can enrol in one of the following two course options:
Option 1 with major coursework thesis: ten subjects plus a major coursework thesis in software engineering.
Option 2 with minor coursework thesis: twelve subjects plus a minor coursework thesis in software engineering.
Specialised subjects can include databases, systems design and testing, and a software development project.

The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.
English language requirements
IELTS (Academic) - minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or
TOEFL Computer-Based Test - A minimum score of 233 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or
TOEFL Paper-based Test - A minimum score of 575 with a score of 5 or more in the test of Written English; or
TOEFL Internet-based Test - A minimum score of 88 with no individual score less than 22; or
Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at PG (postgraduate) level available from the La Trobe University Language Centre; or
Approved equivalent.
Academic entry requirements
An Australian Bachelor's degree in computer science or approved international equivalent, or a four-year engineering degree with content equivalent to a three-year computer science degree or approved international equivalent.

There is continuous demand for graduates with specialist skills in software engineering. Graduates can work as a senior software programmer, business analyst, project manager, testing manager database administration, and user interface engineering designer.
