Course description
This course prepares students to undertake key social work roles: to work with individuals, families and groups; community work; social policy; social research; and organisational planning and administration. The curriculum is based on a philosophy of social justice, and students are given the knowledge and skills to work effectively in complex organisations. A key feature is the practical placement component, which allows students to gain practical skills in the field. Honours is available during the final year.
Course structure
Students undertake a set course of academic and fieldwork subjects, and two, supervised 70 day placements (one in each year), in a professional social work agency. Please note that students may be required to attend some lectures and seminars in block mode and/or outside of normal University hours.

Tuition fee (AUD)

The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.
Additional costs (AUD)
Accommodation costs for clinical placements vary depending on venue. Other approximate costs include A$100 for course manuals.
English language requirements
IELTS (Academic) - minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or
TOEFL Computer-Based Test - A minimum score of 233 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or
TOEFL Paper-based Test - A minimum score of 575 with a score of 5 or more in the test of Written English; or
TOEFL Internet-based Test - A minimum score of 88 with no individual score less than 22; or
Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at PG (postgraduate) level available from the La Trobe University Language Centre; or
Approved equivalent.
Academic entry requirements
An undergraduate Bachelor's degree or approved international equivalent.
Special requirements
Students are required to obtain a Federal police check (or equivalent) and Working With Children (WWC) check before undertaking clinical professional placement. The approximate cost of the police check is $14 (2009 fee).

Social workers mainly work in public and non-government agencies that operate within specific social and health policy areas such as hospitals and community based health services, child and family
care, psychiatric services, protective services, local government, supportive and counselling services.
Professional recognition
The Graduate Entry Master of Social Work degree has been developed in accordance with Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) guidelines. The School of Social Work and Social Policy is seeking provisional accreditation from the Association.
