Course description
This course deals with the business side of medicine, combining health, health information management and health informatics-technology disciplines. Students have a wide choice of career specialisation in their area of preference. Content combines extensive practical experience with theory. Graduates will help to meet the pressing demand across the health sector for experts in all areas of Health Information Management, including casemix and health classification, management of health information systems, health informatics, analysis of health data and research using health information.
Course structure
Students undertake theoretical subjects and focused placements in both years of the course. Students may choose to specialise in their final year of study. High-achieving students are invited to undertake Honours. To provide a smooth transition into the degree, successful applicants undertake a short, introductory summer or winter bridging course, depending on their academic background.

Tuition fee (AUD)

The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.
Additional costs (AUD)
Approximate costs include clinical coding books - A$395 (must be purchased every two years), police check (or equivalent), memory stick - A$30-60. Accommodation costs for clinical placement will vary according to the venue.
English language requirements
IELTS (Academic) score of 7.0 with no individual band score less than 7.0; or
TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 600 with a score of 6 or better in the Test of Written English; or
TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 250 with a score of 6 in essay writing; or
TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 96 with no individual score less than 24; or
Completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 6B certificate at postgraduate (EFS PG2a (75%) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre; or
Approved equivalent.
Academic entry requirements
Applicants will hold a Bachelor's degree in medicine, biomedical science, nursing, allied health, or health sciences, or a related degree with some human bioscience content. International applicants with a recognised, three-year University Diploma in Medical Records Administration (or similar) may be accepted. Applicants with a relevant non-health degree e.g. computer science, statistics, or business, may be required to undertake a short Bridging Course in February and/or additional self-directed study where the initial degree has not provided a foundation in human anatomy and physiology.

Students are required to have police checks prior to the commencement of any clinical placement.
Some non-health students may be required to commence 8 February 2010, for a short Bridging Course. These students will be notified at the time of offer.

Graduates will be able to reach a substantial health information management role in a hospital, health service, health-related research centre or government health department.
Professional recognition
Graduates are eligible for full graduate membership of the national professional association, the Health Information Management Association of Australia.
