Course description
This is an advanced professional qualification in teaching English to speakers of other languages. It is suitable for teachers wishing to upgrade their qualifications and may be taken at two levels: an introductory level for those with limited previous experience of TESOL, or a more advanced level for those with more than three years of practical TESOL experience. Graduates with appropriate pre-service teaching qualifications are qualified for employment in all TESOL sectors.
Course structure
The course has a total of 120 credit points, made up of six, 20-credit point subjects. It covers a range of areas relating to TESOL including the nature and structure of written and spoken English, teaching methodology, materials design and curriculum, and intercultural communication. A course adviser assists with the selection of study units to suit individual needs. Content also includes an optional twenty-two days of supervised language teaching practice. Most TESOL employers in Australia, including schools, require candidates to have successfully completed a practicum requirement.

The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.
Additional costs (AUD)
A$50-150 for course materials.
English language requirements
IELTS (Academic) - minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or
TOEFL Computer-Based Test - A minimum score of 233 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or
TOEFL Paper-based Test - A minimum score of 575 with a score of 5 or more in the test of Written English; or
TOEFL Internet-based Test - A minimum score of 88 with no individual score less than 22; or
Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at PG (postgraduate) level available from the La Trobe University Language Centre; or
Approved equivalent.
Academic entry requirements
An Australian Bachelor's degree with teaching experience or approved international equivalent. Applicants without a recognised initial teaching qualification may be admitted to the course. In such cases, this course will provide a recognised TESOL qualification outside Australia, but it will not meet the requirements for registration as a teacher in government schools in Australia.

The following types of industry experience are available in this course.
- Industry project (university-based, for academic credit)
If the industry experience program is not a registered part of their course a student will need to hold work rights on their visa, this permits the student to work up to 20 hours per week when their course is in session and unlimited hours outside these times. However, if a student has completed their course and their student visa is expiring they will need to apply for another visa with work rights rather than renewing their student visa based on undertaking industry experience.

Professional recognition
This course is recognised by the Adult Multicultural Education Services (AMES). It is also recognised by the Victorian Institute of Teaching if preceded by a recognised teaching qualification.
