Course description

Developed to address a shortage of pharmacists in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia, this course aims to provide graduates committed to providing quality primary healthcare. Key features include an emphasis on rural health issues, emphasis on the integration of science components with patient-orientated components of pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical care, skills in optimising patient therapeutic outcomes and improving patient health, consideration of the role of the pharmacist as a member of the primary healthcare team, and placements in regional Victoria.

Work has commenced on the $230-million Centre for AgriBiosciences and the $90-million La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science. Once completed, these Centres will expand laboratory facilities as well as teaching and research opportunities for La Trobe's science students.

Course structure

First-year studies include biology, chemistry, introduction to pharmacy practice, psychology studies for pharmacy, pharmaceutical formulation, organisation and function of cells, and pharmacy mathematics. Major areas of study in later years include pharmacy practice, therapeutics, pharmaceutical formulation, biotechnology, complementary medicines and quality use of medicines.

Tuition fee (AUD)

The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.

Additional costs (AUD)

Laboratory coat and safety glasses - up to A$30. Students can buy these from any supplier, including the La Trobe University Bookshop; they remain students' personal property.

The estimated maximum total cost for clinical experience and associated travel and accommodation is A$500 per full-time week of placement. Costs may be less, and some may be reimbursed as follows. First-year students (travel only): up to A$20; second-year students (1-week placement): up to A$500; third-year students (1-2 weeks' placement): up to A$1000; fourth-year students (up to 6 weeks' placement): up to A$3000. Please note: international students cannot claim reimbursement of their travel and accommodation costs for placements.

English language requirements

Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 6B certificate at postgraduate (EFS PG2a (75%)) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre; for more information please visit the www.latrobe.edu.au/icollege La Trobe International College website.

IELTS (Academic) score of 7.0 with no individual band score less than 7.0; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 600 with a score of 6 or better in the Test of Written English; or

TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 250 with a score of 6 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 96 with no individual score less than 24; or

Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or

Approved equivalent.

Students undertaking practical placements within some healthcare agencies may be required to undertake a police check. Failure to do so may restrict the range of placements available.

Subject prerequisites

Chemistry and Mathematics determined to be equivalent to the Australian VCE Units 3 & 4 with a study score of at least 30 in Mathematical Methods (either).

There are excellent opportunities for pharmacists in hospital and community practices.

Professional recognition

Graduates seeking professional registration with the Pharmacy Board of Victoria must complete a period of supervised pre-registration employment (currently one year) and then pass a final examination set by the Pharmacy Board of Victoria. Under reciprocal arrangements, this registration is recognised throughout Australia and in several other countries. Please note that graduates who wish to complete the supervised pre-registration employment in Australia require the relevant visa.
