Course description
This course provides students with the skills and knowledge to assess and treat people who have limited ability in daily activities. Students develop skills in the therapeutic use of occupations, individual and group assessment, and in intervention techniques. Students also learn to design equipment and adapt environments to promote occupational performance. Supervised clinical placements are integral to the course, enabling students to develop a sound basis for professional practice.
Course structure
Studies include the theory of occupational therapy (foundation subjects related to human development and health sciences), and occupational therapy intervention (research and clinical work). In first year students undertake an interdisciplinary common year, focusing on basic human biosciences and factors influencing health, and on developing an understanding of the roles of health professionals in the health and welfare sectors.In second year they develop occupational therapy skills. In third and fourth years, students study occupational therapy through contextualised problems, and undertake clinical placements.

The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.
Additional costs (AUD)
Accommodation costs for clinical placements vary depending on venue. Students must also complete food handling and First Aid Level II courses, which are not conducted by La Trobe University and cost approximately A$65 and A$160 respectively. They should also buy a uniform - approximately A$45. Students can purchase uniforms, books and equipment from any supplier; these remain students' personal property.
English language requirements
IELTS (Academic) score of 7.0 with no individual band score less than 7.0; or
TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 600 with a score of 6 or better in the Test of Written English; or
TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 250 with a score of 6 in essay writing; or
TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 96 with no individual score less than 24; or

Occupational therapists work in a wide range of health and welfare systems including general hospitals, rehabilitation centres, community health services, mental health agencies, health services for older people and children with special needs, and support services for intellectually disadvantaged people. Occupational therapists also work as coordinators and consultants in the development and provision of services in areas such as occupational health and safety, and as private practitioners.
Professional recognition
Graduates can apply for membership to the Australian Association of Occupational Therapists. The course is also recognised by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, allowing graduates to register for practice in the United Kingdom, North America, Sweden and other countries (subject to national registration requirements).
