Course description

This double degree offers a comprehensive program to meet the significant increase in demand for computer scientists with an accounting background. Providing both the technical skills of computer science and the accounting and business skills of an accounting degree, this course enhances students' knowledge of business and information technology (IT) sectors and offers flexible career choices. Key features include opportunities for industry-based project work, a choice of streams in computer science incorporating software engineering, data engineering, artificial intelligence or network engineering, and advanced studies in accounting.

Course structure

First-year studies include computer science, mathematics, object-oriented programming in Java and C++, and accounting and management. Later-year studies cover databases, computer systems architecture and design, algorithms and data structures, economics, business law, and financial accounting. Students can specialise in artificial intelligence, data engineering, computer networks or software engineering. In third year students, can undertake an industry-based software engineering project.

Students can also take subjects from other disciplines such as arts, commerce, and sciences. Honours is available to students who demonstrate exceptional merit in either or both degrees, and requires an additional year of study for each degree.

The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.

English language requirements

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; or

TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20; or

Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or

Approved equivalent.

Subject prerequisites

Mathematics determined to be equivalent to the Australian VCE Units 3 & 4 with a minimum score of 25 in Mathematical Methods (either) or 20 Specialist Mathematics.

Additional information

Students who do not have the appropriate computer science background may be required to commence three weeks early than the Semester Start dates of 1 March and 26 July to undertake accelerated first year computer science subjects.

Career opportunities

Graduates are employed in commercial systems development, information systems management, financial analysis, and in general management in science and technology-related fields. Graduates may also apply modern information technology techniques in the commercial sector, including banking and finance. Computer science or accounting consultancy work, teaching, and professional practice are other areas for graduates of this program.

Professional recognition

Graduates of the Bachelor of Computer Science are eligible for professional membership of the Australian Computer Society (ACS). The course is accredited by the ACS.

The Bachelor of Accounting has been accredited by both CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA). Graduates are eligible for membership with either professional accounting body, or with other professional groups such as the National Institute of Accountants (NIA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
