Course description

This course enables students to combine studies in civil engineering with specialised studies in recognised business disciplines, thereby preparing for careers in management, leadership, human resource management, or project management in civil engineering. It provides major studies in civil engineering and a business major in marketing, international resource management or human resource management.

Students also have access to the Faculty Industry Cadetship Program and mentoring programs, which vary by course and campus. Visit Faculty website for more details.

Course structure

First-year studies include mathematics, physics, engineering, accounting, and environmental science. Later years cover surveying, geomatics and hydraulics, environmental law, earth science, structural mechanics and design, advanced mathematics, geotechnology, and regional and transport engineering. Students can take minors in economics and business law.

English language requirements

Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre; for more information please visit the www.latrobe.edu.au/icollege La Trobe International College website.

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; or

TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20; or

Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or

Approved equivalent.

Subject prerequisites

Mathematics determined to be equivalent to the Australian VCE Units 3 & 4 Mathematical Methods (either) and Specialist Mathematics or Physics.

Graduates are well placed to work in positions that need skills in both engineering and business. Project management, for example, is an important area of employment for engineers - it requires a comprehensive understanding of the financial and human resource management aspects of a project, as well as the technical engineering skills.
