Course description

Biology is the study of all forms of life animals, plants, fungi and microbes at ecological, organism, cellular and molecular levels. It is the foundation for many areas of applied science, including medical science, agricultural science and horticulture, animal husbandry, ecology, conservation biology and biotechnology. This course emphasises hands-on experience, with equal time given to lectures and practical classes including use of the Melbourne Wildlife Sanctuary at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus. An Honours year is available.

Students also have access to the Faculty Industry Cadetship Program and mentoring programs, which vary by course and campus. Visit Faculty website for more details.

Work has commenced on the $230-million Centre for AgriBiosciences and the $90-million La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science. Once completed, these Centres will expand laboratory facilities as well as teaching and research opportunities for La Trobe's science students.

Course structure

Half of first year involves an introduction to core areas of biology - organisation and function of cells, diversity and biology of animals, plants and microbes, genetics and evolution - and an introduction to chemistry. Students can take other subjects from other science disciplines or other from disciplines in the University. In later years, students major in two areas, choosing from biochemistry, microbiology, cell and molecular biology, genetics, human biology, ecology and conservation, botany, and zoology.
