Course description
This course allows students to teach in the secondary or adult education sectors, providing them with a longer and richer period of teacher training than a Bachelor of Arts/Diploma of Education combination. The course includes subjects in teaching methods and education theory and provides in-school teaching experience. Students engage in educational related studies while developing their knowledge in the humanities disciplines.
Course structure
First year comprises foundation studies. Students concentrate on two humanities and social sciences disciplines acceptable as teaching methods, such as drama, English (which can include linguistics), English as a Second Language (ESL), history, humanities, Languages Other Than English (LOTE) and media studies methods. In second and third year, students enrol in Arts and Education subjects that include supervised teaching rounds. In the final year, students undertake the more intensive teacher-training component.

Students can choose methods from diverse arts disciplines, including: English or linguistics (English Method), history, art history (History Method), Chinese, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek, Spanish (LOTE), media studies or cinema studies (Media Studies Method), anthropology, legal studies, philosophy, politics, sociology and cultural studies (Humanities method), Chinese, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, linguistics, modern Greek and Spanish (as part of the ESL method). The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.
English language requirements
Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 6B certificate at postgraduate (EFS PG2a (75%)) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre; for more information please visit the La Trobe International College website.
IELTS (Academic) score of 7.0 with no individual band score less than 7.0; or
TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 600 with a score of 6 or better in the Test of Written English; or
TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 250 with a score of 6 in essay writing; or
TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 96 with no individual score less than 24; or
Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or
Approved equivalent.

The following types of industry experience are available in this course.
- Workplace experience for academic credit
If the industry experience program is not a registered part of their course a student will need to hold work rights on their visa, this permits the student to work up to 20 hours per week when their course is in session and unlimited hours outside these times. However, if a student has completed their course and their student visa is expiring they will need to apply for another visa with work rights rather than renewing their student visa based on undertaking industry experience.

(HASU and also the Academic Skills Unit in Bendigo) is a resource for all students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students are welcome to consult HASU staff about any aspect of their academic work: reading, thinking about essay topics, taking notes, giving oral presentations, writing assignments, interpreting feedback comments, and interpreting culture and expectations.
