Course description
This course provides graduates with an understanding of the scientific processes involved in agricultural management and practice, and the political and social requirements for international development. The agricultural sector is often best able to assist in this development process, particularly in the response to climate change.
Students also have access to the Faculty Industry Cadetship Program and mentoring programs, which vary by course and campus. Visit the Faculty website for more details.
Course structure
First-year studies include agricultural systems, culture and globalisation: introduction to anthropology, biology, basic chemistry, globalisation.
Second and third year studies include biochemistry for agricultural sciences, plant and animal production and management, statistics for life sciences, development, globalisation and culture, electives from recommended humanities and social sciences subjects. Fourth- and fifth-year studies include case studies in agricultural science, experimental design and critical analysis, further studies in plant and animal production and management, development studies, major research project, electives from recommended humanities and social sciences subjects. Later-year studies include opportunities for international exchange.

Tuition fee (AUD)

The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.
Additional costs (AUD)
Depending on the subjects chosen, approximate costs include: laboratory coat - A$30, dissecting kit - A$40. These may be purchased from any supplier and become students' personal property.
English language requirements
Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre;

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or
TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; or
TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or
TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20; or
Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or
Approved equivalent.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Agricultural Science have wide-ranging career opportunities that extend well beyond traditional agriculture. Graduates can find jobs in technological investigation and consultancy in agriculture; conservation, environmental protection and in resource management; applied research; agribusiness, agronomy and in the development and application of biotechnology in agriculture and related industries. Further studies in agriculture, or related areas such as biotechnology or veterinary science, are also possible. Graduates of the Bachelor of International Development are likely to find work in international aid and development agencies, non-government aid organisations, consulting, diplomatic service, trade commissions and education.
Professional recognition
Graduates are eligible to become members of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology.
