Course description

The sustainable management of natural resources and related management of agricultural systems are among the most important current issues requiring broadly-trained graduates, prepared in both science and business disciplines. This degree focuses on sustainable land and animal management and practice, and on the sciences relevant to the understanding of primary production, resource management and agribusiness. Key features and studies include: industry placements and case study teaching; international study experiences; impact of agriculture on the environment; soil productivity; plant and animal production and management; agribusiness/marketing; statistics and experimental design; viticulture.

Students also have access to the Faculty Industry Cadetship Program and mentoring programs, which vary by course and campus. Visit: Faculty website for more details.

Work has commenced on the $230-million Centre for AgriBiosciences and the $90-million La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science. Once completed, these Centres will expand laboratory facilities as well as teaching and research opportunities for La Trobe's science students.

Course structure

First-year studies cover the impact of agriculture on the environment, cells and organisms, genetics and human biology, chemistry, plant science, statistics. Second and third year cover land and soil management, plant and animal production and management, agribusiness/marketing, landscape management with gis and remote sensing, and climate, sustainability and society. Fourth-year studies include case studies in agriculture science, experimental design, and a major research project.

Tuition fee (AUD)

The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.

Additional costs (AUD)

Depending on the subjects chosen, approximate costs include: laboratory coat - A$30, dissecting kit - A$40. These may be purchased from any supplier and become students' personal property. Additional costs for field trips (for food, accommodation, travel) may also apply.

English language requirements

Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre; for more information please visit the La Trobe International College website.

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; or

TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20; or

Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or

Approved equivalent.

Additional information

Students at the Albury-Wodonga and Bendigo campuses must transfer to the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus after successful completion of their first year. Please note: this degree is being phased out from the Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga campuses - no new enrolments will be permitted at these campuses from 2010.

Career opportunities

Graduates have wide-ranging career opportunities that extend well beyond traditional agriculture. Graduates can find jobs in technological investigation and consultancy in agriculture; conservation, environmental protection and resource management; applied research; agribusiness, agronomy and the development and application of biotechnology in agriculture and related industries. Further studies in agriculture, or related areas such as biotechnology or veterinary science, are also possible.

Professional recognition

Graduates are eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology.
