Course description

This professional accounting qualification offers learning in career-specific areas including accounting, auditing, finance, business law and taxation. A generalist first year provides a basic platform of knowledge spanning accounting, economics, management, information systems, law, and business statistics. In addition to fulfilling requirements for membership of CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, students can select advanced subjects in management, marketing, finance and economics.

Course structure

First year: eight compulsory subjects worth 15 credit points each. Second year: five compulsory subjects and three second-year elective subjects. Third year: one compulsory subject and seven elective subjects. Students graduate with a major in accounting. The course is designed to allow for an additional, optional seven-subject major or four-subject minor.

Tuition fee (AUD)

The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.

English language requirements

Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre; for more information please visit the La Trobe International College website.

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; or

TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20; or

Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or

Approved equivalent.

Career opportunities

Many career options are available to accounting graduates, particularly when they have good communication skills and combine accounting with the study of another major field of business. Graduates may choose to work in the public accounting area specialising in auditing, investigative accounting, financial advising or taxation. Opportunities in accounting also exist in the private sector in both large and small organisations, and in the public and not-for-profit sectors. Graduates are provided with sufficient background to seek employment in the management, consulting, and general business advisory areas.

Professional recognition

This course has been accredited by CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA). Graduates are eligible for membership to either professional accounting bodies or other professional groups such as the National Institute of Accountants (NIA) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in London.
