Course description

This course comprises three components:

Theoretical studies: covers generic professional theory of individual, group, child and family psychology, and studies into ethical practice and client assessment.

Internships: comprises at least 1,000 hours/126 days, with a minimum of 252 client contact hours.

Research: both quantitative and qualitative investigations are permitted for the 10-15,000 word research thesis, which is conducted as an empirical inquiry into aspects of therapy such as the therapeutic process experiences of clients and therapists, investigations into change processes, investigations into the lived experience of people suffering from specific problems, and studies of treatment outcome.

Tuition fees are for 2009 only. The University reserves the right to increase fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7%

Additional costs (AUD)

Approximate costs include: Class notes for the Research Seminar A unit and for accommodation and food for a single residential weekend group workshop - A$400; police check - A$14.

English language requirements

IELTS (Academic) - minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Computer-Based Test - A minimum score of 233 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test - A minimum score of 575 with a score of 5 or more in the test of Written English; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test - A minimum score of 88 with no individual score less than 22; or

Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at PG (postgraduate) level available from the La Trobe University Language Centre; or

Approved equivalent.

Academic entry requirements

Psychological Society (APS)-approved fourth year in psychology at an Australian university at an A-B average or equivalent. Overseas-qualified graduates would need to have their qualifications ratified by the APS. Some work practice in the counselling field and a demonstrated capacity at interview to reflect on one�¿s practice and personal development will enhance an applicant�¿s chances of selection.

Selection is also based on references, existing knowledge of humanistic and person-centred approaches to counselling psychology and the likelihood of an applicant fulfilling the personal and professional requirements of a program in counselling psychology.

Special requirements

Students are required to obtain a police check and Working With Children (WWC) check before undertaking a clinical professional placement.

Industry experience

The following types of industry experience are available in this course.

  • Workplace experience for academic credit

If the industry experience program is not a registered part of their course a student will need to hold work rights on their visa, this permits the student to work up to 20 hours per week when their course is in session and unlimited hours outside these times. However, if a student has completed their course and their student visa is expiring they will need to apply for another visa with work rights rather than renewing their student visa based on undertaking industry experience.

Professional recognition

The course constitutes a fifth and sixth-year course of study in professional psychology. It is accredited by the Australian Psychological Society for full membership of the Society and, following one year of graduate experience in the field, membership of its College of Counselling Psychologists.
