Course description

This course prepares students for research and practice in clinical psychology, and provides the specialist training for registration as a professional psychologist and also for membership of the Australian Psychological Society. It includes lectures and seminars, practical placements, and a research project written up as a literature review and research paper.

Eligible students may upgrade to the coursework Doctor of Clinical Psychology, requiring three years' study.

In keeping with the scientist-professional training model, emphasis is placed on the application of reserach based on developments in psychology knowledge.

Tuition fees are for 2009 only. The University reserves the right to increase fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7%

English language requirements

IELTS (Academic) - minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Computer-Based Test - A minimum score of 233 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test - A minimum score of 575 with a score of 5 or more in the test of Written English; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test - A minimum score of 88 with no individual score less than 22; or

Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at PG (postgraduate) level available from the La Trobe University Language Centre; or

Approved equivalent.

Academic entry requirements

Applicants should have:
- At least a B average (70% or above) in an Australian Bachelor�¿s degree with a major in psychology, or approved international equivalent
- Completed a fourth year in psychology with a major thesis component with at least a high B grade average (75% or above) or approved international equivalent
- Experience in volunteer work, or work related to psychology
- Two academic referee reports (proforma to be used)
- Two professional referee reports (proforma to be used)


Applications are ranked on the basis of academic and professional suitability for the purpose of selecting candidates for interview. Arrangements may be made to conduct a telephone interview if necessary.

Special requirements

Applicants with overseas qualifications need to have their academic achievements assessed by the Australian Psychological Society prior to applying.

Industry experience

The following types of industry experience are available in this course.

  • Workplace experience for academic credit

If the industry experience program is not a registered part of their course a student will need to hold work rights on their visa, this permits the student to work up to 20 hours per week when their course is in session and unlimited hours outside these times. However, if a student has completed their course and their student visa is expiring they will need to apply for another visa with work rights rather than renewing their student visa based on undertaking industry experience.

Professional recognition

This course provides the specialist training required to gain registration as a professional psychologist with the Victorian Psychologists' Registration Board, membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and to be eligible for specialised supervision leading to full membership of an APS college.
