Course description

This course prepares civil engineers for their roles in the design, construction and maintenance of essential infrastructure such as buildings, roads, dams, water supply systems, railways and airports, to name a few. The course is offered at the Bendigo campus, providing training and experience within an area of significant skills shortage, and providing excellent linkages to local employers. Graduates can also work internationally on a wide range of exciting and important projects.

The course supports a strong theoretical training with intensive practical training and experience. Key features of the course include:

Tuition fees are for 2009 only. The University reserves the right to increase fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7%

English language requirements

Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre; or

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; or

TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20; or

Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or

Approved equivalent.

Mathematics determined to be equivalent to VCE Units 3 & 4 Mathematical Methods (either) and either Specialist Mathematics & Physics.

Industry experience

The following types of industry experience are available in this course.

Paid industry experience
Industry project (university-based, for academic credit)

If the industry experience program is not a registered part of their course a student will need to hold work rights on their visa, this permits the student to work up to 20 hours per week when their course is in session and unlimited hours outside these times. However, if a student has completed their course and their student visa is expiring they will need to apply for another visa with work rights rather than renewing their student visa based on undertaking industry experience.

Graduates work in private industry, consultancies, local, state and federal government organisations and in research. Career paths lead through general engineering practice and management roles to the highest positions.
