Music licence

Universities Australia has negotiated a licence agreement, on behalf of Australian Universities, with Australian music societies. The licence will enable copying, communication and use of recorded music and sound recordings on CD, DVD, audio tape, vinyl records, including live performance of music, for educational purposes by the University without seeking permission from the copyright owners. The University pays an annual licence fee to four music societies for the use of their members' musical works.

This licence is beneficial to the University as the Australian Copyright Act does not contain any exemptions to infringement of copyright in sound or music recordings and the statutory licence does not include the ability to copy and/or communicate commercially produced sound or music recordings.
