Research and Publications
Professor Pei’s research interests are mainly in health service management and health policy, particularly in health system and policy reform in China. Professor Pei has been involved in a range of studies which focus on the challenges that hospital managers in China have been facing and bring out the interplay between the need for management training and the need for policy reform. She has a number of publications. The main foci of her research include:
- needs assessment of management training for health administrators;
- evaluation of health service management education programs;
- curriculum development for health service management education;
- health policy capacity building;
- human resource management in Chinese public hospitals;
- quality of care and patient safety;
- health insurance reform in urban China; and
- managing for organisational performance and information system.

Collaborations with Chinese institutions
Professor Pei plays a key role at La Trobe University in liaison with Chinese universities and government agencies in China. Professor Pei was committed to the development of the La Trobe China Health Program. Her doctoral research was a preliminary contribution to the establishment of the cooperative project in the field of teaching and research relating to health care management and health policy between La Trobe University and Kunming Medical College. The program has been extended to Beijing, Harbin and Chengdu. Several joint programs have been established with leading centres of health management training and health services research in China to collaborate in faculty-building, management training and research projects.
Professor Pei has contributed to the establishment and development of La Trobe-Peking University-Beijing Foreign Studies University Centre for China Studies (www.latrobe.edu.au/china-centre) and the establishment of the Confucius Institute at La Trobe University (www.latrobe.edu.au/confucius-institute). Professor Pei has been appointed as the founding Executive Director of the Centre for China Studies and Director of the Confucius Institute.
