School Visit Programs
The Department strongly believes in fostering an interest in information and computer technology among school students. We offer a series of workshops in schools, engaging students in fun activities that teach them about the core principles of information technology and computer engineering.
Building an iPad/iPhone Application
Creating the "next big thing" for iOS devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch) is a fun and rewarding experience. In this hands-on workshop, students will build their first-ever iPad application.
We demonstrate how to program a range of capabilities into iPad apps such as incorporating pictures from the built-in cameras, playing audio and videos and drawing animations.
Games Design and Development
Students are introduced to game design and development using industry-level software. Students will be able to build a game rapidly, designing characters and programming movements and interactions with enemies. They will then be able to test and experience their game.
Networking
In this workshop, students create a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) telephony network in our Cisco lab. ‘Internet telephony’ refers to communication services used everyday, such as SMS, faxes and voice messaging applications like ‘Hey Tell’, which are transported via the internet rather than the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
As a team students will be using Cisco routers, switches and phones to recreate the VoIP system. By the end of the workshop, they will learn how to route calls from one network to another.
