Postgraduate Studies

Graduate Diploma/Graduate Certificate in Humanities and Social Science
This degree is designed to enable students with a need for bridging undergraduate coursework to take undergraduate units in the Cinema Studies Program or other programs within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. For further details, please contact the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Tel: (03)9479 2023.

MA Preliminary
Entry and study requirements for the MA Preliminary program are similar to those for the Honours program, but may be varied to suit the needs of individual students, eg. by including more coursework to make up for a lack of Cinema Studies background. The Program is therefore especially suited to applicants who may wish to pursue research at the Masters level or above, but who do not have the necessary minimum requirements for direct entry into the Honours program.

Master Of Arts By Coursework and
Postgraduate Diploma In Cinema Studies & Media Studies
The MA by Coursework in Cinema Studies & Media Studies is a two-year program articulated into a Part 1 and Part 2. Contact the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences office for details. Telephone: 9479 2023.

Part 1: Postgraduate Diploma in Cinema Studies & Media Studies
Part 1 consists of the Postgraduate Diploma in Cinema Studies & Media Studies . It requires completion of six Cinema Studies or Media Studies units at fourth year level (totalling 120 credit points). 20 credit points from another part of the University and recognised by the Program may be used as a substitute. One core unit, CST41IAM: Issues and Methods, focuses on research and is required of all students, and must normally be taken in the first available semester after enrolment.

Students who complete Part 1 with a "B" average, or those with alternative entry requirements (eg. an upper second or first-class Honours degree or an MA Preliminary degree with a grade average of at least "B"), may apply to continue to Part 2. Those students who successfully complete Part 1 but do not continue to Part 2 will automatically be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Cinema Studies & Media Studies.

Part 2: Masters by Coursework in Cinema Studies & Media Studies
Part 2 consists of three units at fifth year level, plus a 15,000 word minor thesis. One unit from another part of the University and recognised by the Program may be used to substitute for one of the units. A supervisor from the academic staff will work closely with each Masters by Coursework student in the preparation of the minor thesis.

A selection of fourth and fifth year units includes Introduction to Video Practice, Film and Interpretation; Cinema and Cultural Difference; Single Film Research; Film as Text: a formal analysis of cinematic modes and styles; reading courses, issues and methods, gender on screen, communication in context, current issues in communication policy and media & cultural theory. Not all units are available every year.

Master Of Arts by Research
To obtain a Master of Arts by Research, you need to submit a thesis of no more than 40,000 words, and usually around 30,000 words, that constitutes an original contribution to the discipline, and has been supervised by at least one qualified senior member of the academic staff. It is possible to incorporate some practical or production work into a Master of Arts research thesis. In some cases, we may require a certain amount of coursework before the candidate embarks on research and writing for the thesis. There are procedures which allow particularly worthy Master's work to be upgraded to doctoral (PhD) level after a minimum of one year's enrolment. Please consult the postgraduate co-ordinator for further details. Candidates enrolled full-time will usually be expected to complete the degree between twelve and eighteen months, or two to three years part-time.

Doctor Of Philosophy
Cinema Studies offers a Doctor of Philosophy by supervised research thesis. Due to the wide research areas of staff, prospective students have the advantage of being able to pursue their research in a wide variety of areas.

To obtain a PhD, you need to submit a thesis of no more than 100,000 words, and usually about 75,000 words.
