China Health ProgramMaster of Health AdministrationThe La Trobe University Master of Health Administration, is one of the leading health management programs in Australia. The China stream has been tailored to Chinese circumstances, developed in collaboration with senior academics at participating universities around China. Entry to this stream is conditional upon completion of the La Trobe Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management, or an equivalent program of study as recognised by La Trobe. The course is designed for hospital managers, policy managers in government health departments and public health program managers. Classes are taught in bilingual. English proficiency is therefore not required as a condition of entry or graduation. There is no age restriction on enrolment. Applications to enrol can be submitted at any time (see how to apply page). As there is a limited number of places in this program and finalising visas, permits etc can take some time, early application is encouraged. Learning ProgramThe curriculum is based on extensive research into the training needs of health care managers in China and consultations with academics from a number of leading Chinese universities. The program is based on an integrated course structure with the various subjects complementing each other and the full extent of the topics covered providing a carefully planned program of study. The course recognises that senior managers have a wealth of experience, judgement and knowledge that comprises one of the key resources of this course. The mode of delivery ensures that we learn from our own experience and from each other through the sharing of experience and strategies and collective reflection on practice. Throughout the program there is an emphasis on problem-based learning; a focus on the real problems and issues faced by managers. There is a strong emphasis on learning to learn; building life-long learning into our regular practice. The course is taught in three phases within a twelve-month period. The first phase comprises an intensive three month period of study in Melbourne comprising of four units: Health Services Resource Management, Health Information Systems, Health Care Quality, and Action Learning Project (Part 1). All subjects are valued at 15 credit points in the La Trobe University system. Students participate in weekly classes, study blocks and study-related site visits. During the course work phase students prepare to undertake a number of field work projects. The second phase is a four month period of field work for which students return to their place of work. The students implement the Action Learning Projects and prepare reports describing the projects and their outcomes. The third phase comprises another intensive three month period of study in Melbourne comprising of four 15 credit point subjects: Comparative and Historical Study of Health Systems, Principles and Practice of Public health; Health Management Strategy and Operations, and Action Learning Project (Part 2). Students participate in weekly classes, study blocks, study-related site visits, and report the process and outcomes of their projects. The students who have completed all the required subjects and pass the assessment will be awarded La Trobe University Master of Health Administration.
