Timetable
There will be three timetables, all of which are for different uses
1. The first one is the general calendar for the whole six months of study, ie. Week sessions, total sessions and credit for every subject.
2. The second one is a weekly calendar including week study and block study.
3. The last one is a daily calendar, presented month by month. Every day’s subject code, time and classroom are in the calendar. It is the timetable you will use the most.
Finally we’d like to talk about how to find the classrooms. Every student can get a campus map, with the index for every building in LTU. You can locate the building according to the classroom code. For example, the office code of China Health Program is HS1 321. HS is the abbreviation of Health Science and “1” means building one, you can find the location of C6 in the map index. The first number of the room is the floor number therefore “3” is the 3rd floor. This is also used as the room number 321.
课程表的使用
大家一下子拿到好几张不同类型的课程表，可能会觉得不知所措。其实很简单，了解各个课程表的用途后，会对大家的学习安排大有帮助。 第一类表是整个学习其间的课程学时表，即各个课程在各周的学时和学期总学时及学分。 第二类表是课程周表，包括了今年下半年、明年上半年、集中授课的课程。 最后一类表是课程月历表，即每月一张，每张表标明每天的课程、时间和教室。该表是大家平时上课最直接使用的课程表。 最后说说怎样找到各教室的位置。大家会同时拿到一张学校的校图，上面有学校所有建筑物的索引，大家只要根据教室编号，即可根据索引找到地图中的确切位置。例如中国卫生项目办公室的编号是HS1 321，HS是Health Science的缩写，在索引中找到HS1的位置C6，即可在图中找到其位置，然后进入该楼三层，到达321房间，既是该办公室。

Library
The library is the most useful resource for your study. You will be taken on a tour through the library during orientation. A Librarian will give you a brief introduction to the library usage and how to use the online databases that are available.
The library has three levels, and the entrance is on level two. Level one or ground floor is mainly serials, level two has computers, reserved books and audio/video materials as well as the loans desk; the books in level three are for student borrowing.
You can borrow books using your student card. The call number of the book can be searched using the LTU library website. Or you can sort it using the computers in the library. To return a book, you can simply put it into the slot outside of the library.
图书馆的使用
大家在学校学习其间，最常用到的资源就是图书馆。在适应活动中，我们会带领大家参观图书馆，在这里我大概介绍一下几个要点，以帮助大家更好地使用。
图书馆分三层，但是入口只有从二层进入。一层主要是期刊；二层主要是电脑和在图书馆翻阅的图书和音像图书，以及借书处；三层主要是各类外借的图书。
大家凭学生证即可从图书馆借书。书目查询可以通过学校网站的图书馆网页中查询，或是在图书馆的书目查询电脑中检索。
还书不必到借书处，只要根据各书号塞进图书馆外相应的还书口即可。

Accommodation
LTU has several kinds of accommodation to meet students’ requirements. If you are not satisfied with your current accommodation, you can consult the house staff to change (when vacancy is available). Please note, if you have signed a long term contract with them, normally you must live there for 3 months before leaving.
学校的住宿
学校对于不同学生的住宿要求，有以下几种类型选择，对于不满意当前住宿情况的同学可参考以下内容进行相应调换（是否有空房，需要向管理员询问）。但是请注意，如果和某宿舍区签署了长期住宿的协议，则必须住满3个月后才能离开。
Graduate House：This accommodation area includes two buildings, both are near the campus and a tram station, which is convenient for shopping and going to the city. There are single rooms and double rooms (the fee of each bed is lower than single room). The bedding is provided and changed regularly. It also has public bathrooms, public kitchens, a coined laundry and computer room, etc. There are ten kitchens in total for students and you can use the public kitchenware. If you require more kitchenware you should purchase your own. The lounge room has a TV and VCR/DVD and you can also rent tapes or CDs from the house office.
Graduate House：该宿舍区分为两个宿舍楼，距离校园最近，且距离电车车站很近，便于购物和到市中心。宿舍房间有单人间，也有双人间（每个床位平摊后的房费低于单人间），且均提供床上用品并定期换洗，以及公共卫生间、投币式洗衣房、计算机室。该宿舍楼共设有10个公用厨房，学生可以使用其公共的烹调设备及厨具，如果觉得该不够用或想个人专用，则需要自行购买厨具。公用休息室设有电视机、录像机等，并可以到管理员处租借录像带（光盘）。
University Lodge：The conditions are similar to Graduate House, but the two buildings only have one computer room. There is a large entertainment room, where you can play pool or have other entertainment. The building is located on the other side of campus. A free campus bus can take students to campus. There is a train station within walking distance that can take you to city.
University Lodge：条件与Graduate House差不多，只是两个宿舍楼只有一个计算机室，但是有一个很大的活动房，可供大家运动及娱乐用。该宿舍区位于校园的另一侧，有校车可以到达校园，乘坐附近的火车也可以到达市中心。
BM Guest House：Is located near University Lodge, and has only one building. Although it has several public kitchens and a stove, there is no public kitchenware. You are required to purchase your own. Every room in this building has a telephone, but there is no computer room or entertainment room.
BM Guest House：与University Lodge距离很近，只有一个宿舍楼。虽然也有多间厨房和公共的烹调设备，但是没有公用厨具，需要自行购买。该宿舍楼里每间房间均有电话，但是没有计算机室和活动房。根据以往学生的反馈，该宿舍楼的管理不是很完善，所以最终对该宿舍的意见最多。对于在没有其他选择的情况下住进该宿舍的同学，建议可短租（按短租的价格）几天，寻找到其他固定住所后再搬出。
Apartment：LTU also has some apartments with several bedrooms, which are suitable for sharing (Everyone’s share is lower than single room in above accommodation). Although it is not far away from campus, you will need to take public transportation to campus. Also you have to pay gas, water, and electricity bills and purchase and prepare bedding and kitchenware. If you are interested in it, please come to our office. We will help to organise inspection (If you sign the contract, you must live there for more than 3 months).
学校的单元房：学校也有部分多卧式的单元房，适合多个学生一起合租（每人分摊的费用低于单人间宿舍）。该单元房离学校不远，但需要乘坐公共交通达到学校，且需要自行支付水电气费用，及要自己准备床上用品和厨具。有兴趣的同学，可以到项目办公室来，我们会帮助联系询问及看房（一旦确定，至少要租3个月以上）。
Local resident：You will often read various advertisements for room leasing on the poles in the Agora. Normally they are local residents and often they are sharing accommodation. Most of them are low price. If you are interested in you can contact them. Please be aware that not everyone can bare housemates’ different living habits.
校外民房：学校商业中心（Agora）的广告柱子上经常能看到租房的广告，一般都是校外的居民住房，且多与其他人合住，价格较低。有兴趣的同学可以依据广告中的信息联系一下，但是请注意，自己是否能够忍受合住人员不同的生活习惯。

Although we provide some transportation guides at the orientation, we would like to outline information briefly here:
你周围的交通
虽然发给大家的资料中有交通指南，但是对于不熟悉当地交通的学生来说，可能会有一些困惑。在此，我们把最交通情况中的主要内容作一介绍：
Public transportation：There are three types of public transportation in Melbourne: tram, bus and train. They use one ticket (Metcard), ie. Within the valid time and zone you can take this transportation as many times as you like.
公共交通：墨而本有电车(Tram)、汽车(Bus)和火车(Train)三种主要的公共交通，它们都通用同一种车票(Metcard)，即在该车票有效时间和区域内，可以任意乘坐以上三种车辆任意次。
Tickets types：The Melbourne metropolitan area is divided into Zone 1 and Zone 2. Metcard tickets are also divided as Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 1and 2, etc. La Trobe Bundoora campus is located between Zone 1 and Zone 2. So if you only move nearby, a Zone 2 ticket is enough. If you want to go to the city, Zone 1 ticket is ok (Please pay attention whether it is in Zone 1 or Zone 2 when you get on the transportation to ensure you purchase the correct ticket).
Note: it is an offence to have the wrong ticket or not validate your tickets, ticket inspectors are always on public transport checking and will impose fines.
Besides the location, the tickets are also divided by time, such as 2 hours tickets (valid within 2 hours), daily tickets, weekly tickets or monthly tickets.
车票种类：墨而本分1区(Zone 1)、2区(Zone 2)和3区(Zone 3)，相应的车票也分1区票、2区票、1和2区票等。拉筹伯大学班多拉校园介于1、2区之间，所以如果只在附近活动，只要2区票即可，若要到城里，可只买1区票 （上车时要注意上车地点是1区还是2区，以免买错票或被误认为逃票）。除区域外，车票还有时间的不同，即2小时票（2小时内有效）、日票（当日内有效）、周票、月票。
Purchasing tickets：Normally the tickets can be bought in a Newsagent, Milk Bar, or the automatic ticket machine at the railway station. You can also buy it when you get on a bus or tram.
车票购买：一般书报店（News Agent)、奶吧（Milk Bar）都卖车票，也可到火车站的自动售票机处购买，或是上汽车时向司机购买。
Timetable：Nearly all the public transportation runs on time, however the intervals can be very long depending on the day (15 minutes for tram and train in off-peak, 20 – 30 minutes for bus). So the best way not to waste waiting time is to watch the timetable. Train timetables can be found in every station. Tram or bus can be found at www.victrip.com.au.
车辆时刻表：这里的公交都非常守时，但是一般间隔时间较长（非高峰期电车和火车是15分钟，汽车是20分钟或半小时），所以最好在乘车前查看时刻表。火车时刻表在各车站都能看到，电车、汽车、火车的最新时刻可以到www.victrip.com.au网站中查询。
Arrive：Of the three kinds of transportation, only trains stop at every station (except the express train in rush hour). If no one gets on or off the bus or tram, it won’t stop. So be sure to press ring to remind the driver before the stop is arriving. Tram and bus stops do not have names, they have numbers instead, make sure you pay attention to when your stop is approaching so that you don't miss it.
到站：三种公共交通，除了火车每站都停（高峰期的快车除外）外，电车和汽车若没有人上下车的话，车就不停。所以到站前一定要按铃提示司机。且电车和汽车没有站名，所以要随时注意是否已经到站。
Driving by yourself：If you have a drivers licence in China, you can drive car in Australia after the license is translated by an authorised organisation. Because the traffic regulations are quite different between the two countries, please get to know the local laws before driving. You can come to the CHP office to get details.
自驾车：对于国内有驾驶执照的，经过专门部门的翻译，可以在澳大利亚开车，但是由于两国交通规则不同，请想自驾车的同学一定要先了解当地交通规则。具体可到中国卫生项目办公室咨询。
Taxi: You can book a taxi by phone or wave your hand by the road to catch one. If the light on the top of taxi is on, it means it is available. The lowest fare is from $2.60 and $0.96 for every kilometre. Booking number: Northern Taxi 131119；Silver Top 131008.
出租车: 可用电话呼叫，也可在路边招手截车。车顶灯亮着，说明是空车。最低一级的车费起价$2.6，每公里$0.96。呼叫电话：北区出租汽车(Northern Taxi) 131119；银顶出租汽车(Silver Top) 131008。
Suggested route to city：The students living in Graduate House can take tram 86 on Plenty Road (Road No. 27). The students living in Uni Lodge can go to Macleod station and take train to city. o Map：We also provide some maps for your convenience. All the students living in LTU accommodation (Graduate House, Uni Lodge and BM Guest House) can take the free campus bus to campus. If youwant to go to another place or search a Melbourne map, please come to CHP office.
推荐进城路线：住在Building W的同学，可以到Plenty Road(27号路)乘坐86路电车进城。住Building A和B的同学，可以到附近的Macleod火车站，乘坐火车进城（在Flinder车站下）。住在该宿舍的同学若要到校园上课，可乘坐学校的免费校车。
地图：随该简报另附几张附近区域和城里的地图，以便于大家熟悉当地环境。如果有同学需要到其他地方，想查询当地地图的，可到中国卫生项目办公室咨询。

Shopping
Because Melbourne residents are scattered everywhere, the shopping centres are also located inside the resident areas. The main shops are：
购物场所
因为墨尔本地区的住宅分散，所以购物中心也分散到各个居民区。现把主要的购物商店介绍一下：
Supermarket：Coles and Safeway are focused on food and daily necessities. K-mart and Target are sell mostly clothes, electric appliances and entertainment.
These shops are normally open for 7 days and some of them are open until midnight. These shops can be found in Summerhill Village shopping centre (by the road 27) and Northland shopping centre, which are both near campus. In these shopping centres, you can also find other small shops for other products. One shopping centre is enough for your daily shopping.
You can take tram 86 to Summerhill Village shopping centre by road 27. To Northland shopping centre, you can take bus 550 from the centre of campus.
自选商店（Supermarket)：以食品和日用品为主的大型超市有Coles和 Safeway，以服装、电器和娱乐为主的有K-mart和 Target。一般这些超市都7天营业到晚10点，可以在学校附近的两个购物中心Summerhill Village购物中心（位于27号路边）和Northland购物中心找到。在这些购物中心中，大家还会看到其他各类小型专卖店。这些购物中心足以满足大家的日常生活需要。从学校要到Summerhill Village购物中心，可在27号路上乘坐86路电车。到Northland可在校园内乘坐550汽车。
Milk Bar or Newsagent：They sell groceries. Normally they are a little smaller than a supermarket but are located closer to residential housing. The price is usually a little higher than in a supermarket.
奶吧(Milk Bar)和文具店(News Agent)：即杂货店，一般开业时间比自选商店长，且分散在居民区中。但是这里的东西比自选商店要贵一些
Market：Another place you may go shopping is Preston Market, where there are several Chinese groceries and it is easy to buy Chinese food and products. Also the fresh vegetables, fruit and meat are cheaper than in a supermarket. Every Saturday, all kinds of products are on sale after midday. It is the best time to get a bargain. But be aware, that time is also the most crowded, and you had should take a trolley or shop together with classmates.
菜市场：另一个大家可能常去的购物场所是位于Preston的菜市场，这里有中国的食品杂货店，可以买到符合中国口味及习惯的食品及用品，以及新鲜的蔬菜、水果和鱼肉，比超市中的要便宜一些。特别是每周六中午12点以后，各种产品开始逐渐降价，是购买物美价廉商品的好时机。但是请注意最好带着小推车或是大家合伙去，因为这时候市场最拥挤，购物最累人。
City：For the students who like bustle, the city will be the best shopping place. The Chinatown, located on Little Burke Street, has all kinds of Chinese restaurants and Chinese art and gift shops. Swanston Street, linking Flinders street station and Melbourne Central station, is the most prosperous street. Also there are many more shopping and entertainment visiting places.
市中心：对于喜欢热闹的同学，可以进城。位于城里Little Burke Street街上的唐人街里，有各种中国餐馆和中国艺术、礼品店。连接Flinder火车站和Melbourne Central车站之间的Swanston大街是城中最繁华的街道，当然城里还有很多其他购物、娱乐和参观的场所。

Communication
In Melbourne the local fixed call is charged per call not duration. Normally the public telephone booth charges $0.40 every time and LTU accommodation charge $0.40-0.50 per time. Please consult the house staff to get the exact fee details.
For the short term studying students, mobile phones will be the most commonly used. The mobile set bought in China can be used in Australia. Most students like to buy Optus prepaid sim card, which is similar to “Shen Zhou Xing” in China. Use begins after the activation. If the phone credit is used up, you can recharge it. The recharge card can be bought in post offices, milk bars or supermarkets. It is expensive to make a call by mobile, but free to receive calls. Optus provides “yestime” service, that is the 10-20 minutes free call between prepay customers after 9:00pm. Certainly, there are many other mobile companies and other mobile plans, you can choose for yourself.
If you want to phone home, there are many IP phone cards to choose, which are similar to the IP card in China. Chi-tel card, Shout card, Easybreak card or Home card are usually used, and easy to buy in post offices or milk bars. Every card has different fare levels and every accommodation will have different requirements for phone cards. Please consult the house staff.
Please note, when you make a call using a phone card, whether the destination phone is connected or not, you will be charged for a local call. Normally when you finish one call and before you hang up, you can continue to make another call without another local call charge.
It is easy to make a call to your mobile from China. Please note, because all the Australian mobile numbers start with 0, it must be left out. For example, to call 0412 178448, Chinese part should dial 0061 412 178448.
To make an international call from Australia, the number you dial before the country code is 0011, not 00, this is for both direct phone calls and IP cards. For example if you want to phone Beijing, you should dial 0011 8610-destination number.
通讯
墨尔本当地的固定电话是按次收费，而不是按时间。一般在公用电话亭里是$0.40，宿舍的公用电话一般是每次$0.40-0.50，具体请询问宿舍管理员。
对于短期来澳学习的同学，手机可能是最常用的通讯方式。国内的手机完全可以在澳洲使用。一般常用的是购买Optus公司的Prepay手机卡，类似于国内的“神州行”，完成注册手续（可以请店员或是英语好的同学帮助注册）后即可使用。这里用手机打出很贵，但是用手机接电话是免费的。而且Optus公司提供晚9：00以后的10-20分钟同类SIM卡间免费通话。如果话费用完只需再买充值卡充值即可。这种手机卡及充值卡一般可以在邮局、杂货店、超市等商店购买到。当然这里还有很多其他许多手机公司的各种使用方案，大家可以根据自己的需要进行比较和选择。
如果大家想往国内打电话，这里也有很便宜的IP电话卡，用法与中国的IP电话卡差不多。一般常用的有大唐卡、Shout卡、家卡、中国峰、上海卡等等。各个卡的收费标准不一，且各个宿舍区可能对使用某种卡有特别要求，请分别了解。这些卡也都可以在邮局或是杂货店买到。请注意，用这些卡打长途电话时，不论对方的电话是否接通，首先会接通当地电话，即收一次当地话费。如果打完一个电话，在未放下话机时，经常可以继续拨下一个长途电话。这时，只要不放话机，就不再收取本地电话话费。
来自国内的国际长途可以直接打给个人的手机，但是要注意因为当地手机是以0来头的，所以国内打过来必须把这个0去掉。例如某人的手机是0412 178 448，国内打过来要拨0061-412 178448。
从澳大利亚往国外打电话的国家区号前，不是00，而是0011，不论是直拨电话，还是通过电话卡。例如打往北京，应该拨的号码是00118610-对方号码。

Living habits
Australians have some different habits from Chinese. It will cause some misunderstandings or contradictions if you don’t know and could cauase offence. The following are some of them:
Most of Australians are friendly and polite, especially the educated and aged. Sometimes they will greet strangers on the street, the polite response is to greet back.
In Australia the staff numbers are set according to the current workload. So it is very easy to see people waiting in line in banks, shops and government offices. The second person should always keep distance from the first person who is being served. (It is called one meter line in China).
Some special regulations are often written and displayed at an eye-catching place and most Australians will follow the rules. If you are not satisfied with these rules, you can report to related staff. You can go beyond the rules only when you get their permission.
Most Australians care about social morality to show their education and civilization. For example keeping quite in public. You will find they usually speak softly inside and open and close doors quietly. Most of the doors in University buildings or shopping centres are automatic, but the room doors in accommodation need to be controlled by yourselves. Please be sure you don't slam the door to prevent bothering others.
To an Australian, it is dirty to spit into a sink. If you need to do that, you must use the toilet facility. For the sink to prepare food, even cleaning your mouth is prohibited. You have to do it in the toilet or bathroom.
生活习惯
澳大利亚作为一个西方国家，其当地的一些生活习俗可能与国内不同，在不知道的情况下冒犯可能会引起一些误解或矛盾。以下列出一些主要习俗，以便大家了解和入乡随俗。
澳大利亚是个礼仪国家，基本上每个人都非常友好、讲礼貌，特别是收过高等教育的人士或中老年人。在路上他们可能会主动向陌生人打招呼，积极回应是礼貌的表现。
澳洲人很讲秩序，也非常守规则，当然工作效率是按总体的工作量与人员配备来核算的。所以，无论是在银行，还是商店、政府部门，都经常能够看到排队等待服务的现象，且第二个人与正在接受服务的人之间保持一定距离（国内称为一米线）。
对于一些特殊规则，一般都会在醒目的位置注明，澳洲人都会遵守此规则。如果对此规则不满意，可以向相关人员反映，得到允许后，才能超越该规则行事。
澳洲人很注意公共场所的公德，作为有教养和文明的表现，例如保持安静。大家可能发现一般人在公共的室内场所说话都很轻，甚至关门开门都很注意尽量不发出声音。教学楼及商场的很多门都是自动控制的，所以不必在意。但是宿舍的各个门需要大家自己控制，门自己关上的砰砰声很容易影响别人休息。
一般澳洲人的习俗，在水池里吐痰是极为肮脏的表现，不论在教学楼还是宿舍里。如果要吐，一定要吐到厕所的便池里。而且对于用于处理食品的水池，甚至漱口都是被禁止的，这时只能到厕所（洗澡间）的水池里去漱口。
