Grievance procedures

 

There is a provision for any student that might be unsatisfied with a result or disagree with a disciplinary decision made by staff or a committee at La Trobe University. Every student has a right to seek further clarification regarding these decisions.  If a student is still unsatisfied with the information provided or the result of the enquiry, an ‘appeal’ process can be undertaken by following avenue.

 

Almost always the best place to start is with the lecturer or the staff member concerned.  If, for example, you are concerned over the award of a grade in an assignment, it is sensible to discuss the grading with the academic concerned to obtain feedback on the marking process and academic judgement involved.  If the explanation for the grading proves to be unsatisfactory to you, it might then be appropriate to take the matter further.  The most appropriate way to proceed would then be to approach the overall unit co-ordinator or course co-ordinator for her/his views on how the matter could be resolved, for example, by having the piece of work re-marked or ‘second marked’.

 

At times, the appropriate person to approach with a grievance might be the Head of School and in some cases, where School staff have already been consulted, the Dean of the Faculty.  This is usually only appropriate where the matter relates to concerns over procedure or bias or other serious matters which represent more than a difference of opinion about the academic merit of a piece of work.  The University also has an ombudsman who can be consulted if a concern remains after appropriate channels within the Faculty have been explored.  We suggest that you correspond in writing and keep all related documentation.

In summary, proceed as follows:

Staff member -> Unit Co-ordinator -> Head of School -> Dean -> Ombudsman

You will be able to locate the names of these people on the La Trobe University Website or ask a member of the China Health Program for details.

 

投 诉 程 序

拉筹伯大学给每位学生提供了投诉机会,任何学生对学校教员或学委会的决定不满意时, 都可以使用此投诉程序。每位学生都有权深入追问这些决定,如果对于询问的结果不满意, 可以通过以下投诉渠道进行上诉。

通常最好是从相关的授课教师或教职员工开始。

例如,你对作业的分数有异议,首先要和批改作业的教师讨论,以了解相关评分程序和判分标准。

如果你对这些解释不满意,可以进一步追问。接下来应该向课程协调人反映整个问题, 寻求他/她的解决方案,例如重新判分或二次判分。

有时也可以向学院院长反映问题,或者在一定情况下(已经与该教职员工进行了沟通), 找学部主任。但这时主要是解决判分程序、偏见或其他严重问题,而不仅仅是作业学术学术方面的意见差异。

如果这些合理投诉渠道都使用了,但问题还没有解决,学校还有专门的调查官可以过问此事。

我们建议你尽量使用书面通信并保留所有相关文件。

总的来说,投诉过程有以下几个级别:
教职员工-> 课程协调人 -> 学院院长 -> 学部主任 -> 调查官
