About the Centre
Located at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, the Centre was formally established in March 2007 as an initiative of Peking University, Beijing Foreign Studies University and La Trobe University.
The Centre for China Studies is one of the central components for La Trobe University's overall strategies in engagement with China.
The Centre aims to provide a focal point in Australia for both individual and collaborative research in China Studies, for the development of business and training opportunities in a period of rapidly increasing bilateral links, and for the promotion of Chinese language and culture in Australia. The Centre’s tranquil setting in beautifully landscaped parkland offers an ideal milieu for scholarly and exchange activities.
Objectives
- Foster internationalisation of learning, teaching and research activities through enhancing collaborations among universities and institutions between Australia and China.
- Build long term strategic relationship between the University and leading educational and research institutions in China.
- Provide an international wide platform to facilitate research collaborations among scholars all over the world to pursue China studies.
- Promote Chinese language and culture in Australia.
- Develop quality training and exchange programs between Australia and China.
Activities
The Centre seeks to fulfil its mission and achieve its objectives by means of the following specific activities:
- Establish, develop and maintain strategic relationship with Chinese leading universities, research institutions and government departments via organising and coordinating visits of senior management of the University to partners in China.
- Build and maintain strong collaborative links between the partner universities through student and staff exchanges and joint programs.
- Engage in and coordinate China related research projects with leading universities, institutions and scholars worldwide.
- Convene conferences, public lectures and workshops, develop media promotional strategies and work with local communities to promote Chinese language and culture in Australia.
- Provide learning opportunities for interested parties by providing high quality, customised consultancy services and delivering short to medium term training programs.
Structure
Centre for China The Centre is headed by an Executive Director, who is assisted by a Board of Management comprising senior representatives from the three universities.
Facilities
The Centre's facilities include furnished offices, high-tech workstations, a library and a multi-functional seminar room equipped with electronic teaching facilities for lectures and seminars.
News and events
Access recent and historical news reports of the many events organized by the Centre in its promotion of China and China-related studies. Events include cultural festivals, seminars, academic forum, and an exchange program for students. These events not only enrich the scholar and student’s life, but provide important intercultural experiences that will contribute to an improved understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture.
