Lisbeth Zwerger has put her artistic interpretations on many well known classic stories. Her most famous of these works are The Wizard of Of and Alice in Wonderland The Wizard of Oz The illustrations in this book are remarkable. There is so much originality in this work and there is absolutely no inluence from the film that has given the western world it view on what the characters from the original book would look like. The scarecrow is an enorous round character with tiny legs and arms with a large pointed hat, he has huge hands and a white face. This eerie looking character is much different to what we all know and love of the scarecrow with no brains. This is the difference of the two:
The charatcter of Dorothy also changes from a cute naive girl to Zwergers interpretation of a strange looking child with short hair and rather boyish. This perception of dorothy and the way she is illustrated is olmost cartoon like. Alice in Wonderland Zwergers interpretation of this book is also much different to the disney version everyone remebers and recognises as the destinctive look of Alice and all the characters. Alice in Zwergers interpretation is a brown haired girl with a long face and is not attractive in the slightest, she looks very macabre and the way she is drawn in Zwergers scratchy style makes her look even less attractive. This book uses a lot more bright colours compared to her previous books and the use of colour gives the book a real fairy tale look, it is very strange and enchanting. This is Zwergers interpretation of the tea party compared with the famous Disney movie:
When Lisbeth approaches darker works she depicts the characters in a humerous way such as the wicked witch in The Wizard of Oz, in her illustrations the witch weras a red hat and carries a tiny yellow umbrella which takes away all of the witches intimidating characteristics. |
