Zwerger is heavily influenced by Arthur Rackham and it is extremely obvious in her work, they both have a love for the characters they are illustrating and their use of colour is almost identical. The two artists also use free watercolour technique which gives both of the artists work their distinct look. The influence is obvious in many of her works, for example Thumbeline.

Here are some of Arthur Rackmans works compared with Lizbeth Zwergers.

Arthur Rackman - Rip Van Winkle and Lisbeth Zwergers Hansel and Gretel. There is a clear resemblance in the dull colour tonesw and the way the characters are viewed. The mysterious and dark theres that are central to Rackham's work are recreated by Zwerger but with her own artistic spin on her characters and scenery, many of the themes in Rackham's work are easily picked up in Zwerger's.

Arthur Rackham also did a version of Alice in Wonderland but it is very different to Zwergers version. In this illustration it shows just how similar the two artists are in their style. The use of basic colour and a sort of sketched style appear in both of the artists works. In this example it shows the use of background that is a symbol of both of the artists work, the way that Rackham uses grey and dark colours in his background was a large influence on Zwerger and it shines through in all of her works.

Lisbeth Zwergers style is all of her own her use of pen and ink with basic water colours is a staple of her works and the addition of more watercolours and gouache has given her artistic style a new direction. The new direction she has taken is evident in her most recent books such as Alice in Wonderland and even earlier in the Wizard of Oz shows how she has taken a brighter feeling to her books and with more emphasis on scenery. Her famous style is that of basic colours and darker themed illustrations such as in her books The Swineherd and The Nut Cracker. These books show her amazing ability for taking a well known story and putting her own style and passion into the illustrations. The pictures show how she uses only basic colours but can give such an amazing and emotive feel to each and every page.
