Here we will look at the similarities between the original version by Hans Christian Andersen and Disney's animated film version.

In both versions, the Little Mermaid is the youngest of the Sea King's children, and is quite attractive. Also, in both versions, once they are a certain age, the King allows his daughters to go to the surface.

When the Little Mermaid reaches the surface for the very first time, she sees a prince on a boat. This is when the storm hits, and the prince is thrown from the boat.

The Little Mermaid saves the prince and takes him to shore. It is at this time, when The Little Mermaid becomes obsessed with the prince and after much consideration, she decides to see the Sea Witch for help.

The Sea Witch gives The Little Mermaid a potion which will take away her singing voice, and give her legs so she can be human.
