The Wizard of Oz is neither completely good nor evil, yet he is still immensely powerful in the Land of Oz. The wizard shows both elements of goodness as well as wickedness and it is these qualities that define him as ambiguous.
Good qualities the Wizard possesses:
- Willingness to help others
For example, Oz was prepared to help Dorothy and her friends in their requests the second time.
Evil qualities of the Wizard:
- Manipulative
For example, Oz manipulated people into building him Emerald City and made those who entered wear green glasses so they thought that the city was that colour everywhere.
- Dishonest
For example, Oz let everyone in the Land of Oz continue to believe that he was a great wizard fallen from the clouds.
- Selfish
For example, Oz was willing to risk Dorothy and her companion's lives by sending them off to kill the Wicked Witch of the West before helping them with their requests. Oz only saw the personal gain that he would achieve from having either the witch killed or never having to grant the fellowships desired wishes.
