Dorothy's house landed on top of the Wicked Witch of the East , killing her. The Wicked Witch of the East owned some silver shoes , that possessed some unknown charm and these were then given to Dorothy to own and control. Upon landing, Dorothy meets The Good Witch of the North and she explains to Dorothy that she must follow the yellow brick road and ask the Wizard of Oz , at Emerald City for help. The good witch warns of it being a long journey, fraught with pleasant but also dangerous things and so gives Dorothy a kiss to protect her.
Dorothy meets Scarecrow , Tin-man and Lion along the way and they join her on the road to see the Wizard of Oz, enduring many adventures along the way. Oz told Dorothy that he couldn't help her unless she kills the Wicked Witch of the West . After being taken captive by the witch, Dorothy manages to destroy her by pouring water on her and melting her into nothing. Returning to Oz, Dorothy was nearly granted her wish of going home, as Oz was going to sail her away in his hot air balloon, however, he left without her by accident. Dorothy then seeks help from the Good Witch of the South , Glinda who tells Dorothy that if she taps her silver shoes together, they'll take her wherever she wants to go. Dorothy returns to Kansas and reunites with her family.
Emerald City:
Emerald City is in the centre of the Land of Oz.
Oz ordered his people to build Emerald City for him. He made them all believe everything inside was green because he made everyone who entered wear green spectacles.
Golden Cap:
Whoever is in possession of the Golden Cap, after performing a charm, are able to summon the Winged Monkeys only three times ever. The monkeys are obligated then to fill the person's demands to the best of their capabilities.
Lion:
Dorothy , Tin-man and Scarecrow find Lion in one of the forests they were walking through. The Lion had tried to scare them all and attacked Toto, until Dorothy smacked him on the nose and told him he should be ashamed of himself for picking on something so small. This is when the trio heard Lion's story about how he lacked in courage and was scared of danger. The others taking pity on the Lion offered a place in their company and they all headed towards the Emerald city , the lion hoping to ask the Wizard of Oz for some courage.
The Lion showed many heroic qualities along the groups' adventure and certainly attempted to help save his friends from any perceived danger where possible.
Munchkins:
The Munchkins are the people of the East and their favourite colour is blue. They were under the command of the Wicked Witch of the East , until Dorothy saved them by her house falling on top of the witch, squashing her dead. Previously though, the Munchkins were powerless against the witch as they possessed no magic or any craft that could defeat her. They were just simple farmers and therefore, they had to succumb to the evil witch and be her slave, fulfilling her dreadful wishes.
Scarecrow:
Dorothy finds Scarecrow upon a pole in the middle of a corn field, where a Munchkin farmer placed him there to scare away the birds. Dorothy helps the Scarecrow down and he joins her on their quest to see the Wizard of Oz .
The Scarecrow wishes for Oz to give him a brain, so he is no longer a fool!
Along their journey, the Scarecrow utilized his thoughts to help in the safety of those around him, making sure that everyone was protected as much as he could achieve.
Silver Shoes:
The Wicked Witch of the East used to own this pair of shoes, which were said to possess a charm. Dorothy was given them after she killed the witch, but she didn't know the charm until the Good Witch of the South told her how to use them. If you tapped the shoes together, they send you to wherever you wish to be. It was these shoes that sent Dorothy back home to Kansas .
The Good Witch of the North:
As her name suggests, the Good Witch of the North, proves that she is good hearted and cares for the welfare of others. Dorothy meets her, along with the Munchkins when she first enters the Land of Oz and realizes she has killed the Wicked Witch of the East. She wears a white dress, has wrinkles and stark white hair and is small in stature. Dorothy knows that she is no longer in Kansas anymore and asks The Good Witch of the North to help her find her way back home. The witch sends Dorothy along the yellow brick road , to Emerald City to ask the Wizard of Oz for help, as he is apparently very powerful. As the witch knows that the journey there is dangerous, she gives Dorothy ‘The Kiss of the Good Witch of the North', which means that no-one will injure her whilst she bears this mark.
The Good Witch of the South:
The Good Witch of the South, named Glinda, is also as her name implies a well-meaning person, who is said to be the most powerful in the land. Dorothy seeks out this witch, after Oz takes off in the hot air balloon without her. Glinda is said to be very beautiful and Dorothy and her friends are in awe of her. She helps Dorothy go home by telling her the charm of her silver shoes . She tells Dorothy to tap her shoes together and command them to take her where she wishes to go. Glinda also helps Dorothy's friends by sending them safely back to their different homes via the help of the Winged Monkeys . She then gave the Golden Cap back to the King of the Winged Monkeys, freeing them from their bondage.
The Wicked Witch of the East:
The Wicked Witch of the East is killed by Dorothy when her house falls on her at the beginning of her journey in the Land of Oz. The Wicked Witch of the East is described as being an unpleasant and horrible person that ruled over the Munchkins, the creatures of the East. Her death was celebrated by the Munchkins , as they were now free from the nasty bondage the witch held over them. Dorothy was viewed as a type of noble Sorceress for destroying the evil witch. The Wicked Witch of the East owned the silver shoes that possessed a certain powerful charm that only the owner could use. After Dorothy killed the witch, she was given the shoes by the Good Witch of the North.
The Wicked Witch of the West:
The Wicked Witch of the West rules over the Winkies , the creatures of the West and uses them as slaves for her own evil purposes. The witch also has control over the bees, wolves and crows in her country, which she uses to fight against strangers who enter upon her land. The witch also possesses the Golden Cap and uses the Winged Monkeys to help her against Dorothy and her friends.
After taking Dorothy captive, the witch tried to steal Dorothy's silver shoes. However amid the confusion and anger of her shoe being taken, Dorothy threw her bucket of water over the witch, which made the Wicked Witch of the West melt away to nothing!
Tin-man:
Tin-man is found in the forest by Dorothy and Scarecrow , all rusted over and unable to move. Thanks to Dorothy and Scarecrow who oil his joints for him, Tin-man is finally free from his rusted bondage and joins the two on their journey to see the Wizard of Oz at Emerald City .
The Wicked Witch of the East is responsible for turning him into tin, as an old woman pleaded with the witch to do so, as she despised Tin-man wanting to marry the Munchkin girl living with her. Tin-man is then in search for a heart and wants to go and ask the great wizard if he can give him one, as he is desperate to love again.
Tin-man manages to save the fellowship numerous times from danger by using his axe to his advantage.
Winged Monkeys:
The Winged Monkeys are powerless to the Golden Cap . Whoever possesses the Golden Cap, after performing a specific charm, are able to summon the Winged Monkeys only three times ever. However, the condition is that the monkeys are obligated to fill this person's demands, where possible, as they are slaves to whoever owns the cap.
The Wicked Witch of the West possessed the cap at one stage and ordered the monkeys to bring Dorothy and the Lion back to her and to destroy the other two companions. The Winged Monkeys obeyed the witch, as they had no option to refuse, as they were powerless against the charm placed on the cap.
At one point, even Dorothy owned the cap; however, she didn't use her power to harm others, but only asked for the safe arrival of her and her friends to Emerald City and Quadlings Land [The Good Witch of the South's home]. After Dorothy's wishes were fulfilled, she gave the Golden Cap to the Good Witch of the South , Glinda at her request. The witch used her wishes to send Tin-man, Scarecrow and Lion back to their homes and then kindly handed the Golden Cap back to the King of the Winged Monkeys, so as they can fly free once more and not be slaves to anyone.
Winkies:
The Winkies are the helpless people of the West and their favourite colour is yellow. Comparable to the Munchkins, these people are the slaves to The Wicked Witch of the West instead. They are obliged to complete the evil witches' demands as they are too frightened and weak to disobey. The witches' power is too great for the Winkies to overcome and therefore, they are powerless and feeble against her. It is only after Dorothy pours her water bucket over the hideous witch that she melts away and leaves the Winkies free once more. However, the Winkies are followers, not leaders and even after they were free from the witches dictatorship, they hoped to make Tin-man their new leader and to rule over them.
The Wizard of Oz
Oz, the Great and Terrible as he called himself, lived at Emerald City , in the centre of the Land of Oz.
Oz isn't a Wizard at all, but just a common man or ‘humbug'. He was only uncovered because when Dorothy went to see him on her second visit, Toto, knocked down the shield he was hiding behind. Ashamed, Oz explained his story that as a young man in Omaha U.S. he was in the circus as a balloonist, but unfortunately the ropes got twisted and he was at the mercy of the winds, who eventually landed him here. He fooled the people in the Land of Oz, because as he fell from the clouds they assumed him to be a great Wizard and he made them believe no different.
Oz tricked everyone around him; he even managed to fool the Wicked Witches as they thought him more powerful than them.
Even though Oz turned out to be no wizard, he did manage to give Scarecrow a ‘bran' new brain, a mixture of bran, needles and pins. He gave Tin-man a heart; an object in the shape of a heart, convincing Tin-man that it is a very kind heart. He then promised the Lion courage, by giving him some liquid that once inside you, gives you courage. Oz tried to grant Dorothy her wish and was going to send her away in the hot air balloon with himself, however, before Dorothy had a chance to board, Oz had already started to sail away and was unable to come down again to pick her up.
