Introduction
Pirates have been praying on ships ships and settlements for over 3000 years. From the times of Ancient Greece to this very time, but the most pirate activity there has ever been was that in the Golden Age of Piracy. This golden age is where our traditional modern day image of a pirate derives from.
The reason there were more pirates around in the Golden Age than at any other point in history is because of the constant rivalry between France, England and Spain. Men known as privateers were given a commission by royals to rob the ships of the bearing their enemies flag. Some of those men turned to piracy.
Some of the most infamous pirates were alive during the golden age of piracy. Most of them were men such as, Henry Morgan, Edward Teach (Blackbeard), Captain Tew (Black Bart), Captain William Kidd, Bartholomew Roberts and many others. There were also woman pirates all of them were infamous in their time. There was Grace O'Malley, Ching Yih Saou and most infamous of all Anne Bonne and Mary Read.
The reason why we have the image of pirates that we have now is all thanks to a writer who's pen name was Captain Johnson, who may have actually been Daniel Defoe. He wrote the book "General History of the Pirates" which has inspired writers to write such classics as Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson and Peter Pan by J.M Barrie which has captivated reader's for many years. There have been many plays and films made that are based on the book Treasure Island. There are many other play's and movies that have been made about pirates.
This is because pirates are seen as romantic figures in literature. Everybody young and old would be thrilled to go on such adventures as the pirates did. Although we can read about them and watch them from the safety of our own houses.
