The story of “Bluebeard” is an intriguing one full of deceit, murder, death, blood and forbidden chambers.

Like many of the folk and fairy tales, its origin dates back to a time when all tales were told orally.

Different versions have developed over the years to reflect the different cultures, times, places and the people who were telling these stories.

“Bluebeard” was first published in 1697 by Charles Perrault and while Perrault’s tale is the most well known today, the “Bluebeard” story is well and truly alive in many different tales.

While Perrault’s “Bluebeard” tale may not appear often in its brutal form in twentieth century children’s fairy tales, it is a story which is still evident today in many adult literature and film productions (Tatar 1999: 140).

This website explores just a few of the different versions of the “Bluebeard” story.
