Snow White is an orphan and lives with her stepmother, the Queen, as a servant. The Queen becomes jealous when the mirror tells her that Snow White is the fairest in the land. Meanwhile Snow White is unaware and continues dreaming about a prince that will find her and carry her to his castle. The Prince then appears and sings a song to her. The Queen orders the Huntsman to take Snow White into the forest to kill her and then return with her heart. The Huntsman finds he can’t kill Snow White and instead returns to the queen with the heart of a deer. Snow White ran deep into the forest and stopped when she came to the small house of the Dwarfs. With the help of the animals Snow White cleans their house in the hope that they will let her stay. The Dwarfs are introduced as hard working minors and all have different names relating to specific characteristics. They are angry at first when they find that someone has been in their house. When the Dwarfs find that it is a girl they are happy, except for Grumpy. The Dwarfs felt sorry for Snow White and agree to let her stay with them. Meanwhile, the Queen discovers through the mirror that Snow White is still living, and decides to poison her. The witch gives Snow White a poison apple when the Dwarfs are at work and Snow White fell to the floor. The animals saw this happen and went to find the Dwarfs and convince them to go home and save Snow White. The Dwarfs find the Queen and chase her until she falls off a cliff to her death. Snow White is laid to rest in a glass coffin by the Dwarfs and later comes back to life with the kiss of the Prince. They then live happily ever after. “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was the first full length animated fairy tale film to be made in history. Animation was extremely important to Disney, and he always wanted to use the latest technology. One could say that the animation side of these fairy tale stories was more important to Disney then the actual story line. It has also been suggested that Disney wrote himself into the stories, as he had a hard childhood and went from rags to riches himself. Disney has turned this story into a childish version and has taken out any adult references and made the story more playful and bright than the more original Grimm Brother’s version. *Picture from Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs |
