THE JOLLY POSTMAN or OTHER PEOPLE'S LETTERS

Allen and Janet Alberg

Summary:

This text follows the ÔJolly PostmanÕ on his journey through the country side in the land far away, delivering mail to characters from well know nursery rhymes and fairy tales. The story not only includes illustrations of his journey but has interactive letters addressed to characters such as the Three Bears from Goldilocks or a postcard to the giant from the story ÔJack and the beanstalkÕ.

Intertextuality:

This text requires the reader to have background knowledge of nursery rhymes and Fairy tales to fully understand what is occurring and to appreciate the story. This background knowledge is particularly important in this text for it doesnÕt cover or retell the nursery rhyme that is being portrayed and therefore is expecting the reader to make the connections. These connections can be made through reading and visualising hints from the text, particularly the letters, and evaluating the illustrations. The reader can then combine these connections with their previous knowledge to create a sense full appreciation, for example realising that a wolf dressed up as a grandma is extracted from the story ÔLittle Red Ridding HoodÕ.
