Sleeping Beauty is about a princess who is doomed to a fate of sleeping for one hundred years. When she was born, seven fairies placed spells on her, endowing her with, beauty, good temper, grace, voice, and that she would die by pricking her finger on a spindle. The last fairy attempted to save the princess by changing the death sentence to a long sleep lasting one hundred years. The time passes and she is finally rescued by her prince and marries. She lives happily ever after.
In this tale Brior Rose is not even told of her fate to help prevent the outcome but left unknowingly to her own devices. Her naivety leads her to the tower containing the last surviving spindle, allowing the prophecy to come true. This tale shows how yet another woman is waiting to be rescued. Although she is asleep, she dreams of her prince and is only able to wake up to him when her time is up. One of the main themes again in this tale is beauty, and the idea that this was regarded as one of the highest qualities a woman could possess. Looking at this tale in particular, messages that come from it are that women who grow up to be beautiful, graceful and gifted in many other ways such as singing and dancing will find a prince that is willing to fight his way through perilous danger to rescue them and offer happy ever after scenarios. There are no fairytales that have the prince asleep and the princess saving him by fighting dragons and facing danger whilst the prince was getting his 'beauty' sleep. Waiting apparently is the best way!
