Lance Ross illustrations with original verse and Norman Lindsay pen sketches

These pictures are an example of the extensive background information which is included for the benefit of the reader. The 1st page describes a swagman in the Australian bush, the 2nd outlines early Australian life and the third picture details 'The story behind the song'.

This illustration is typical of those in the book with large double page pictures that 'bleed' to the edge of the page with additional general information printed in the corner. In the case of this page Ross has chosen to focus on the Coolibah tree mentioned in the verse. He gives a detailed explaination of what the tree is in the paragraph below the verse.

Note the music that features in the book. Each verse includes music to accompany the words. Norman Lindsay's original pen sketches are included alongside the illustrations of Lance Ross, giving each page a montage effect that can be described as a collection of illustrations.

Throughout this picture book additional text is included to provide the young reader with definitions of terms used by Banjo Paterson in Waltzing Matilda. This page shows a Norman Lindsay sketch of a squatter, with the definition closely beside it.

Lance Ross has created whole page illustrations that capture the essence of the song. He has used strong saturated colours to create intense visual images. The resutling illustrations of the swagman appear almost life - like, even the water droplets on his head (right) seem to be rolling down his forehead.
