The Shædow Master
Justin D'Ath
Allen & Unwin
2003

Bendigo author Justin D'Ath's latest teen novel is set in a fantasy world where both magic and drought threaten the fate of the people

Quickwater Lake is the deadly and mysterious heart of the Folavia. It was once the main source of the kingdom's wealth but now it kills any who venture too far in. Ora is the only person known to have survived the lake and much of the book focuses on explaining why. While trying to discover the lake's secrets Ora and her companion, Tasman, ultimately uncover the startling truth as to why the drought-ridden land is dying and the King's role in it. In the end it is Ora alone who can reunite the two peoples of Folavia and save them.

D'ath has written an interesting story though, personally, I felt the story could have gone into more depth in some aspects. The plot moves quickly, sometimes at the expense of the characterization and ideas. Despite that, it is a book worth reading. There are distinct themes of environmental conservation, class and racial equality, though these are not overpowering or preachy.

While I found The Shædow Master a good book, by the end of it I was left feeling disappointed.  Ora's fate is not unexpected and you can pretty much guess what is coming around the corner at some points. Though not a book that really stands out in the crowd of fantasy titles, it is worth reading.
