ETHEL TURNER 1870 - 1958 Only one Australian children's book has been in print continuously over the last century. Ethel Turner's Seven Little Australians occupies a special place in the history, culture and literature of this country. It is outstanding in so many ways - it deals with children as real people on their own terms (rather than as miniature adults), it pictures an Australian society that was striving to establish its own identity (rather like the children), it recognizes family tensions, racial divides, adolescent traumas long before they were fashionable topics, it remains a relevant study of a family in both happiness and tragedy a century later.
