(HELEN) BEATRIX POTTER
1866 - 1943
Biography and studies
- The
Elizabeth Nesbitt Room Illustrators Project at the University of
Pittsburgh has a very detailed study of
Beatrix Potter as well as several other early illustrators.
-
Denise Ortakales
has an excellent guide to women illustrators, with Potter, Kate Greenaway,
Wanda Gag, Millicent Sowerby, and many others. The site includes
biography, bibliography and illustrations.
-
Frederick Warne, Potter's
British publisher (and her fiancé, who died before they could marry), has
a comprehensive site, covering her life, art, animals, as well as the
books.
- For a general perspective, Cynthia
Burlingham's
Picturing Childhood draws on the collections of the University of
California to show the development of illustration through the 19th
century, and
Kay Vandergrift's various studies (including history,
illustration, female voices) are well worth reading.
- The
Beatrix Potter
Society has extensive material on her life and work, and the
Visit Cumbria
tourist site shows many of the sites she used.
- This
essay, from The Journal of the Print World , looks at
imagination in her art.

And lastly, why not do a bit of
searching. The ubiquitous Google
or Alta Vista
build good results from your search. Try "Beatrix Potter" as a name,
as well as descriptors such as children's literature,
illustrations or illustrators or illustrat*, history
in various combinations, along with Peter Rabbit, Jeremy Fisher,
Mrs Tiggywinkle and so on. |
