C S Lewis
1898 - 1963

Clive Staples Lewis is best known to most people simply as the creator of the books of Narnia.  But his personal context adds so much to any analysis of that realm and literature - his deeply held religious beliefs, his life as an academic and his relationships with Tolkien and with Joy Gresham.

Biographies of Lewis:

  • Into the Wardrobe is somewhere between a fan site and a serious study, but has a good biography and links.
  • CS Lewis and Public Life and The CS Lewis Foundation are academic sites emphasising Lewis' Christian writings and philosophy. Both have biographies, articles and links.
  • The CS Lewis links page has an immense set of links to sites covering Lewis' life and academic work, Narnia, the Inklings and plenty more, with a strong emphasis on his Christianity.
  • This biography, by Michael Leuty (St. Peter's, Nottingham, UK), places him in a personal Christian context, while this one, by the Biblical Discernment Ministries (US) writes of his "morbid fascination with occult fantasy" and his role as "the single most useful tool of Satan". Interesting counterpoints!

Narnia:

Lewis writings - texts, criticism and such stuff:

And lastly, why not do a bit of searching. The ubiquitous Google or Alta Vista build good results from your search.  Try "C.S. Lewis" as a name, as well as descriptors such as children's literature, author/s, or history in various combinations along with Narnia, Aslan, Caspian and so on.
