JAKOB and WILHELM GRIMM
1785-1863 and 1786-1859

Biography and studies

  • The Grimm Brothers Home Page, maintained by D.L. Ashliman at the University of Pittsburgh, is a great place to start. It has links to full text editions, biographies, critical analyses, and links to reference and more general studies.
  • The German Fairy Tale Road is an delightful journey through the world and tales of the Brothers Grimm, as well as showing what a primary school class can create with a bit of imagination.
  • David Brown's Folklore, Myth and Legend page in the Children's Literature Web Guide has a wonderful set of links to general reference works and specific web pages in this area.
  • The French ricochet-jeunes site has information about both Jacob and Wilhelm,  their stories, as well as versions and adaptations (and quite a number of other historical authors).
  • The journal Marvels & Tales has a useful links page for Folk and fairy tales, myths and legends.

Texts

Obviously, there is also an immense amount of material available in German, so be ready to translate or to seek assistance if you want to use it.

And lastly, why not do a bit of searching. The ubiquitous Google or Alta Vista build good results from your search. Try "Grimm brothers" or "Brothers Grimm" as names, as well as general descriptors such as children's literature, fairy tales, folk tales, myths, legends or history in various combinations, and specific terms like hausmärchen, or the names of tales.
