HAZEL EDWARDS
b. 1945

Hazel Edwards' Hippopotamus books are features of just about every kindergarten, primary school and public library in Australia.  With their wonderfully gentle approach to common childhood fears they present a sensitive, and yet wryly humorous, look at life.
Hazel also writes adult non-fiction, teacher educational material, junior and adolescent fiction and scripts. Some of her titles have been translated into Finnish, Braille, Japanese and Chinese, and she recently has been in Antarctica on a ANARE arts grant.

  • Hazel's own website includes teaching notes for many of her titles.
  • Her biography pages for the publishers Penguin
  • Austlit  has a short biography and list of works, and you can search further in the database for reviews and analysis

Hazel has also kindly provided some of her own notes for Antarctica's Frozen Chosen (including issues in writing based on her Antarctic experiences), Fake ID, a list of Themes in her works, and ideas on writing journeys and a writer's life.

For a broader list, have a browse through the Australian Authors and Illustrators page from the NSW branch of the Australian School Library Association
