LEWIS CARROLL (Charles Lutwidge Dodson)
1832 - 1898

A writer often judged in terms of modern social values, Carroll remains an intriguing and mysterious character, which is probably most appropriate for the creator of Wonderland.

Biographies and studies of Carroll:

  • From the Lewis Carroll Society of North America - an excellent collection of  biography, studies and background material.
  • Similarly, The Lewis Carroll Home Page has a very useful collection of material including bibliographies.  lewiscarroll.net is useful if you speak French.
  • The Victorian Web covers many aspects of 19th century literature and society. Along with Lewis Carroll, there are Rudyard Kipling, George MacDonald, Robert Louis Stevenson and many more.
  • The French ricochet-jeunes site has information about Carroll and his stories as well as versions and adaptations (and quite a number of other historical authors)
  • This biography looks at Carroll in his life as Rev. Charles Dodgson, mathematician.
  • Fairrosa is a Carroll enthusiast and includes a range of studies and links.
  • The Pazooter includes studies of Carroll and elements from the stories.
  • And of course, Carroll's photographs are essential viewing. Try here or here.

Alice and other Carroll writings:

And one for those who think that Disney created Alice (and Peter Pan, and Toad, and Winnie the Pooh and ...).

And lastly, why not do a bit of searching. The ubiquitous Google or Alta Vista build good results from your search. Try "Lewis Carroll" as a name, as well as descriptors such as children's literature, author/s or history in various combinations along with Alice, Wonderland, snark and so on.
