Industry PhD Scholarship – Grape and Wine Research Industry
This is a joint project between the Department of Primary Industries (Biosciences Research) and the Department of Chemistry at La Trobe University.
Scholarship Brochure (PDF, 7MB)
Project Title
Protecting vines in stress environments - early detection of phylloxera infestation & grapevine stress using chemical biomarkers.
Supervisors
Dr Ian Potter (Department of Chemistry, La Trobe University), Dr Kevin Powell and Dr Simone Rochfort (Biosciences Research, Department of Primary Industries)
Project Description
Apply cutting edge metabolomics technologies, including NMR and LCMS, to develop diagnostics for phylloxera detection. Be a part of a multidisciplinary team addressing a real problem. Phylloxera are ground dwelling insects that have the capacity to devastate the Australian wine industry. The insects can invade vines and remain undetected for years before their effect on vines is obvious. By this time the problem may have spread dramatically. The current best way of detecting the insects is digging up the vines – we are seeking new solutions and need your help!
