- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
- Master of Science (MSc)
Degrees by Coursework (including Research Component)
- Masters of Chemical Science (MChemSci)
All postgraduate degrees are available to Australian and International Students. Excellent facilities are available for research in a wide range of specialist fields. The Department currently has more than twenty-five postgraduate students carrying out research towards MSc, MChemSci and PhD degrees.
Doctor of Philosophy
The Doctor of Philosophy is an advanced research degree awarded by examination of a thesis alone, reporting original research work carried out under supervision over a minimum candidacy of three years. It is available on a full-time or part-time study basis.
Admission to candidature for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy may be granted to applicants who hold an honours degree with first-class standing or an MSc from an accredited university; both must have included a research dissertation as part of the course requirements.
Masters of Science by Research
The MSc requires the submission of a thesis reporting the results of original research carried out under supervision. In certain circumstances the MSc degree may be obtained by part-time research study.
For admission to candidature in the degree of Master of Science, applicants should normally have, or expect to receive, the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours in Chemistry from an accredited university.
Masters of Chemical Science (coursework and research)
This degree is aimed primarily for International Students who wish to upgrade their degree qualifications or add a new Chemistry specialisation through a 2-year coursework and research project program. Successful completion of the MChemSci qualifies students to apply for candidature to a PhD (by research).
For admission to candidature in the degree of Master of Chemical Sciences, applicants should normally have, or expect to receive, the degree of Bachelor of Science with major studies in Chemistry from an accredited university.
A wide range of research projects are available, covering many different facets of chemistry.
Scholarships
Research awards for postgraduate students include Australian Postgraduate Awards, La Trobe University Postgraduate Research Scholarships and Chemistry Department Studentships.
In addition as part of the La Trobe University-CSIRO Collaborative Research Program, up to 5 Aurora Scholarships are to be available every 2 years for PhD candidates who undertake an appropriate collaborative project.
There are other research awards available for overseas postgraduate students. Further details of these, as well as the English language requirements and tuition fees for international students, can be found on the La Trobe University International Students pages.
