La Trobe University
Department of Chemistry

Postgraduate Research

The Department of Chemistry, which was established as a foundation department of the University, is one of fifteen that comprise the Faculty of Science and Technology. It is a member of the School of Molecular Sciences. Excellent facilities are available for research in a wide range of specialist fields. The Department has more than twenty postgraduate students carrying out research towards MSc and PhD degrees. It also offers a Master of Chemical Sciences degree that consists of both coursework and a research project.

The MSc requires the submission of a thesis reporting the results of original research carried out under supervision. In certain circumstances the MSc degree may be obtained by part-time research study. The PhD is an advanced research degree awarded by examination of a thesis alone, reporting original research work carried out under supervision over a minimum candidacy of three years. It is available on a full-time or part-time study basis.

For admission to candidature in the degree of Master of Science, applicants should normally have, or expect to receive, the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours in Chemistry from an accredited university. Admission to candidature for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy may be granted to applicants who hold an honours degree with first-class standing or an MSc from an accredited university; both must have included a research dissertation as part of the course requirements.

For admission to candidature in the degree of Master of Chemical Sciences, applicants should normally have, or expect to receive, the degree of Bachelor of Science with major studies in Chemistry from an accredited university. This degree is aimed primarily at international students who wish to upgrade their degree or add a new Chemistry specialisation through a 2 year coursework and research project program.

Research awards for postgraduate students include Australian Postgraduate Awards, La Trobe University Postgraduate Research Scholarships and Chemistry Department Studentships. In addition as part of the La Trobe University-CSIRO Collaborative Research Program, up to 5 Aurora Scholarships are to be available every 2 years for PhD candidates who undertake an appropriate collaborative project. There are other research awards available for overseas postgraduate students. Further details of these, as well as the English language requirements and tuition fees for international students, can be found in the university's research programs prospectus.
