The Master of Chemical Science (coursework) Program

This course is tailored to providing students with an upgrade or re-orientation of their original degree and then, via a full 1 year research project, giving suitable candidates access to the PhD program. Other non-research focussed options within the M. Chem Sci. structure are being formulated.

The current program is based entirely in the Chemistry discipline area and provides senior level and advanced instruction through the coursework component in several chemistry topic areas (e.g. organic synthesis, environmental chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, sensor technology, nanochemistry, instrumental analysis, computational chemistry and molecular modelling, medicinal chemistry and drug design).

Key features of the degree program include:

  • Lectures in advanced chemistry topics
  • Chemistry coursework and research introduction leading to possible PhD entry
  • Choice within coursework component
  • Choice of research project
  • Development of advanced practical instrumental and laboratory skills
  • Advanced standing possible (based on previous studies) by negotiation

The La Trobe University Master of Chemical Sciences course allows post-graduate students to access senior (3rd year) coursework lecture topics of their choice as they commence their studies. The program builds through the coursework to advanced topics and includes written and oral assessment activities designed to prepare the student for the 1 year research project culminating in submission of a research thesis.

The La Trobe University Postgraduate Handbook includes full details of the M. Chem. Sci. course structure. International students should download the Master of Chemical Sciences Information Brochure (PDF, 0.2MB) for further information.
