Benzotriazole chemistry
(with Dr. P. Savage, CSIRO MHT; LTU/MHT CRP)Benzotriazole is about as good a leaving group as chloride ion but it is also electron withdrawing. That makes it almost unique as a substituent. As a result, in principle, the two methylene protons on bis-benzotriazole methane can be sequentially removed and quenched with electrophiles, and the two benzotriazoles can be sequentially displaced with nucleophiles. That makes bis-benzotriazole methane a C++-- synthon. There are other interesting lines of research in this project.
