Basic Chemistry

- Chemistry of Atoms and Molecules
Atoms, molecules and ions; quantum theory and the electronic structure of the atom; periodic relationships among the elements; chemical bonding; molecular geometry.
- Chemistry of Carbon Compounds
Hydrocarbons; delocalised bonding and aromatics; alkyl halides; hydroxyl compounds; aldehydes and ketones; acids.
- Gases and Liquids
Properties of gases; thermochemistry; intermolecular forces; physical properties of solutions; acids and bases.
Prerequisite: This unit is for students who have not taken VCE Chemistry. There are no formal prerequisites for the course.
Incompatible unit: CHE1GEN.
Class requirements: Three 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour laboratory or workshop class per week.
Assessment: One 2-hour examination (64%), laboratory reports (20%) workshops and class tests (16%). The laboratory course is compulsory and an attendance requirement applies.
